Long Pie is a rare and unique heirloom pumpkin variety! Though it used to be a common cultivar, it almost became extinct. It was kept alive for 30 years by LeRoy Souther of Livermore Falls, Maine. The seeds were then passed on to John Navazio who reintroduced the variety commercially in the late 1980’s – early 1990’s. The fruit are long, 3-5 pounds, and green, but develop an orange spot when they ripen. You cure them just as you would other winter squash, and they will gradually turn completely orange and become extremely delicious and sweet, These can be stored all winter if kept at 50 degrees and are hands down one of the best pie pumpkins in existence!
