The Lakota Squash is a beautiful, orange and green, teardrop-shaped winter squash variety! They were first grown by the Native Americans of the Missouri Valley, including the Lakota. They were first grown and documented by European American settlers around the 1820’s at Fort Atkinson, in Nebraska. They were grown for years by a woman named Martha Newman and eventually donated to the University of Nebraska by a man who went by the name of A.G.. Somewhere in between the first documentation and when they arrived at the university of Nebraska, there was an accidental cross-pollination (probably with a Hubbard Squash). The result was extremely tasty and desirable and was then stabilized D.P. Coyne at University of Nebraska. Lakota Winter Squash are rare, beautiful, and delicious and store extremely well!
